Am gasit pe site-ul: un articol interesant si as dori sa vi-l impartasesc:

1.     What advice would you give someone who wants to buy their first pipe?

Choosing a pipe is always a very personal matter. To enjoy a pipe, its owner must feel completely at ease with it. It should suit the smoker’s personality and character. But there are a few guidelines you might like to bear in mind when choosing a pipe.

1.     A pipe should be as light as possible, and your first pipe should preferably be fairly small.

2.     It’s a good idea to start with a straight or slightly bent pipe. You will need a little more experience before you will be able to keep the more heavily bent pipes under control.

3.     The most important thing, however, is to choose a pipe with a natural finish. Varnished or painted pipes tend to smoke hot.

2.     What materials are pipes made from?

People have tried to make pipes from every conceivable type of material. Even from human bone. But the most popular and the best material used nowadays is briar. This wood is easy to work with, and is very heat-resistant and porous. It’s also lightweight. Meerschaum, a mineral mainly found in Turkey, is another very popular material because it is extremely porous and lightweight. The downside of meerschaum is that it is fragile.

3.     How much nicotine does the tobacco contain?

We are unable to give a figure for this because there are no feasible methods for measuring it. The precise nicotine content depends on how the individual consumer smokes it.

4.     I’m a vegan and I was wondering whether your pipe tobacco contains any components of animal origin?

None of the following products contain components of animal origin: all Borkum Riff products, with the exception of Borkum Riff Gold Cherry and Vanilla, Borkum Riff Cherry Cavendish and Borkum Riff Cherry Liqueur. In other words, our portfolio contains numerous products that contain no components of animal origin.

5.     Which types of tobacco are most commonly used in pipes?

Virginia, Kentucky, Burley, Oriental, Latakia and Perique.

6.     How is pipe tobacco cured?

There are basically four ways to cure tobacco:

o    Sun-cured: the tobacco is left in the open in direct contact with the sun.

o    Air-cured: the tobacco is placed in barns without supply of extra heat.

o    Flue-cured: tobacco bundles are hung over a heat source.

o    Fire-cured: a good example is Latakia, which is exposed to the heat and smoke of burning wood (in this case, oak). This process imparts a particular taste and aroma to the end product.

7.     What is Cavendish? Is it a tobacco?

Cavendish is a manufacturing process, not a kind of tobacco.

8.     What tools are needed to smoke a pipe?

The most basic tools are, of course, the pipe and the tobacco. You also need matches/lighter, a pipe tool, and a packet of pipe cleaners. A pipe tool is an important little metal tool with three arms. One arm, which looks like a spoon, is used to scoop the tobacco. Another arm, which is straight, can be run through the shank. The third arm, which is flat and circular at one end, is used to press the tobacco during smoking. Pipe cleaners are equally important.

9.     How should I fill my pipe?

How you pack your pipe depends on the cut and moisture content of the tobacco. However, the general rule is to pack your bowl in three stages. The first pinch should be packed lightly, as if by a child. The second pinch should be packed more firmly, as if by a woman. The third pinch should be packed tightly, as if by a man. For new pipes, we recommend that you break in the pipe by filling it only about half full. Follow the three pinch techniques, but use just enough tobacco to fill your pipe halfway.

10.  How do I light my pipe?

Move your light in a circular motion until the entire tobacco surface in the pipe is charred, as in lighting a cigar. Use either a benzine lighter or a match. Other types of lighters will impart an unpleasant taste, so avoid them. If using a match, let the sulfur tip burn up before lighting the pipe to avoid that taste. Draw slowly and gently. The tobacco will rise slightly and require that you pack it down a bit. Light it again and occasionally tamp down as the tobacco burns since it expands as you smoke.

11.  Is it all right to relight my pipe?

Absolutely. You can relight it as many times as your patience and matchbox/lighter allow. You should worry about the pipe going out only if you are in a pipe smoking contest and want to win!

12.  What does it mean to break in your pipe?

The breaking in process involves building a cake of carbon inside the bowl. This is best conducted in stages from the bottom up as you smoke. Once the pipe has been broken in, after several complete smokes, you can begin filling it higher. In each case, try to smoke all of the tobacco in your pipe, or the cake of carbon will never form properly.

13.  How do I avoid tongue bite?

Remember to puff very gently! The smoke of a well-filled lit pipe should be soft, cool and smooth. If you get tongue bite, you have not packed the tobacco firmly enough.
